Army officer insignia is designed to signify rank to other officers and an officer’s pay grade. Think of them as the way officers know who to salute! But more than that, they’re symbolic of that soldier’s responsibility, leadership, and level of expertise within the US Army.
Insignia can indicate their rank, which can include various emblems such as chevrons, oak leaves, bars, and stars. Most enlisted personnel wear chevrons or V-shaped stripes. Officers in the O-1 to O-3 pay grades (1st/2nd lieutenant & captain) wear bars, majors and lieutenant colonels wear oak leaves, colonels wear a silver eagle, and all above ranks wear between 1 and 4 stars.
This insignia is specifically designed for service members, not civilians. Soldiers wear them to signal their rank, responsibilities, and leadership to their fellow soldiers; they also indicate pay grade.
